Sciatica

Sciatic Pain

Sciatica is a condition that's related to several conditions that affect the lower back. The condition is caused by the compression of one or more of the nerves within the lumbar region of the vertebral column. Here at Sarasota Chiropractic, the goal of our chiropractor is to alleviate sciatic pain and teach our patients the way to recognize the symptoms related to sciatica. Below are some of the most prevalent symptoms related to sciatica.

.

Traveling Pain

The true tell-tale sign of sciatica is pain that starts at the lower region of the lumbar spine and travels into the buttocks continuing down the leg of the affected side of the body. Some people describe their pain as a dull ache, while others describe it as being sharp and constant. The variance of pain is influenced by a number of factors including but not limited to things such as age, the health of the affected person and the type of event that triggered the sciatica.

Muscle Weakness

Some people experience muscle weakness during the time they experience other symptoms of sciatica. There are instances where people contribute the pain and weakness they experience to other conditions they may have. Our Chiropractor urges anyone that has back pain accompanied by muscle weakness to have their symptoms evaluated sooner rather than later.

Numbness Within the Lower Extremities

Numbness within the lower extremity on the side of the body affected by sciatica may be a constant complaint of individuals who have the condition. The occurrence of leg numbness is most apparent when there's a presence of bone spurs or there is compression caused by discs or bone spurs. It should be noted that sciatica generally affects just one side of the body at a time, it's possible, however, that an individual could experience pain in one leg and numbness within the other.

Edema and Foot Tingles

Inflammation is a natural byproduct of sciatica. The swelling is related to other symptoms of the condition and is the main contributor to the pain and discomfort people experience. Tingling within the foot of the affected side is also a typical complaint among people that have sciatic nerve pain. Although most compare the tingling sensation in the balls and digits in their feet to an arm or a foot falling asleep, this symptom of sciatica differs because it doesn't dissipate.
