How Sleep Affects Back and Neck Pain

How Sleep Affects Back and Neck Pain

Having a good night's rest doesn't come easy for everyone. Restful sleep is even harder to come by for people dealing with back and neck pain.

If you've tried countless remedies to fix your back and neck problems, but to no avail, tweaking a few things about your sleep routine may finally lead to some relief.

The way you lay down in your bed at night -- your bed posture -- plays a big role in how well you sleep. The design of your pillow and mattress also are important. To help you with getting a better night's sleep and wake with less pain, here are a few tips you should follow:

Make sure your lumbar spine is supported

When you lay down at night, you have to make sure that your lumbar spine is being supported as you sleep. If you like to sleep on your side, then you should put a small pillow in between your legs to help give it support. This will keep it aligned and stop it from being compressed. Make sure your top leg is even with or a little bit behind your bottom knee. It's good to sleep on your side or back, rather than your stomach when you have back problems.

Buy a good mattress

A lot of people make the mistake of buying a cheap mattress, which can make spine and neck problems even worse. Investing in a good quality mattress will cost a lot upfront, but in the long-term, it will be well worth it. Memory foam is a popular option in mattresses on the market today, but you should steer clear of this feature if you have back or neck pain.

Choose a pillow that's nice and firm

This will ensure that your cervical spine gets proper support. You want to avoid down or feather pillows because they don't offer enough support. If you sleep on your side, find a pillow that will fill up the space between your ear and bed. If you sleep on your back, make sure you can still see your feet while lying flat on your pillow.
